Addiction Therapy
Compassionate, Evidence-Based Treatment to Help You Reclaim Your Life
Addiction can quietly take hold of your thoughts, your emotions, your relationships, and your sense of self. What may begin as a way to cope with stress, trauma, anxiety, or emotional pain can gradually become something that feels difficult—or impossible—to control. You may feel trapped between the desire to stop and the fear of what life will feel like without it.
At Guided Path Counseling, we understand that addiction is not a moral failure. It is a complex psychological and neurological condition that develops for meaningful reasons. Our role is not to judge you—but to help you understand yourself, heal the underlying causes, and build a life that no longer requires escape.
Recovery is possible. With the right support, insight, and tools, you can regain control and create lasting, meaningful change.
You may benefit from addiction therapy if you:
Feel unable to stop or reduce substance use despite wanting to
Use alcohol or drugs to cope with anxiety, depression, trauma, or stress
Experience cravings, urges, or obsessive thoughts about using
Feel guilt, shame, or secrecy surrounding your substance use
Notice your relationships, work, or daily functioning being affected
Have tried to stop in the past but found yourself returning to use
Feel emotionally dependent on substances to feel normal, calm, or okay
Are in early recovery and want support maintaining sobriety
Addiction often develops as a way to survive emotional pain. Therapy helps you address both the addiction and the underlying emotional drivers.
Our Approach to Addiction Treatment
At Guided Path Counseling, our clinicians use evidence-based therapies to address both the behavioral and emotional aspects of addiction. Treatment is personalized to your specific experiences, needs, and goals.
Our approach may include:
Understanding the root causes of addiction
Exploring underlying trauma, anxiety, depression, attachment wounds, or emotional distress that contribute to substance use.
Developing healthier coping mechanisms
Learning practical skills to regulate emotions, tolerate distress, and navigate triggers without relying on substances.
Reducing cravings and preventing relapse
Identifying patterns, triggers, and vulnerabilities while strengthening emotional resilience and self-control.
Rebuilding self-trust and identity
Addiction often erodes self-esteem. Therapy helps you reconnect with your authentic self and develop a stronger sense of stability and confidence.
Supporting recovery at any stage
Whether you are actively using, newly sober, or maintaining long-term recovery, therapy provides ongoing support and guidance.
A Safe, Confidential, and Nonjudgmental Space
Many individuals struggling with addiction carry deep shame, fear, or self-criticism. At Guided Path Counseling, we provide a safe, supportive environment where you can speak openly and honestly without judgment.
Our clinicians understand the complexity of addiction and the courage it takes to seek help. You will be met with compassion, respect, and clinical expertise every step of the way.
Healing is not about perfection—it is about progress.

With the right therapeutic relationship and evidence-based treatment, it is possible to:
Regain control over your choices
Reduce or eliminate substance use
Improve emotional stability
Strengthen relationships
Restore your sense of self and purpose
Build a life that feels meaningful, stable, and fulfilling
Recovery is not just about stopping—it is about healing.
Our Clinical Approach to Treating Addiction and Recovery
At Guided Path Counseling, we treat addiction using evidence-based, clinically proven therapies that address both the behavioral patterns and the underlying emotional and psychological causes of substance use. Addiction is rarely just about the substance itself—it is often deeply connected to emotional pain, trauma, anxiety, depression, or difficulties with emotional regulation. Our goal is to help you understand the function addiction has served in your life while building healthier, more sustainable ways of coping.
Our clinicians tailor treatment to each individual, drawing from several highly effective therapeutic modalities:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps individuals identify and change the patterns of thinking and behavior that contribute to addiction. Many people struggling with substance use experience automatic thoughts such as “I can’t handle this,” “I need this to relax,” or “This is the only way I can cope.”
CBT works by helping you:
Recognize triggers, urges, and high-risk situations
Identify unhelpful thought patterns that reinforce substance use
Develop healthier, more realistic ways of thinking
Build practical coping strategies to manage stress, anxiety, and emotional discomfort
Strengthen your ability to make intentional, values-based choices
Over time, CBT helps reduce cravings, improve emotional stability, and increase confidence in your ability to cope without relying on substances.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behavior Therapy is especially effective for individuals who experience intense emotions, impulsivity, or difficulty tolerating distress. Many people use substances as a way to escape overwhelming emotional states. DBT helps you develop the skills needed to navigate those emotions safely and effectively.
DBT focuses on four key areas:
Distress tolerance: Learning how to tolerate emotional pain without turning to substances
Emotion regulation: Understanding and managing intense emotional experiences
Mindfulness: Increasing awareness and control over thoughts, urges, and behaviors
Interpersonal effectiveness: Improving communication, boundaries, and relationship stability
These skills help reduce impulsive behaviors and strengthen emotional resilience.
Motivational Interviewing (MI)
Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative, nonjudgmental approach that helps individuals explore their ambivalence about change. Many people struggling with addiction feel torn between wanting to stop and fearing what life will feel like without substances.
Motivational Interviewing helps you:
Clarify your personal reasons for change
Strengthen internal motivation
Reduce resistance and self-doubt
Build confidence in your ability to recover
Rather than forcing change, this approach helps change emerge naturally from your own values and goals.
Trauma-Informed Therapy
Many individuals struggling with addiction have experienced trauma, whether in childhood or adulthood. Trauma can significantly impact the nervous system, emotional regulation, and sense of safety, often contributing to substance use as a coping mechanism.
Trauma-informed therapy focuses on:
Creating emotional safety and stability
Processing unresolved traumatic experiences at a safe pace
Reducing emotional triggers and reactivity
Helping the nervous system return to a more regulated state
Addressing trauma can significantly reduce the emotional drivers of addiction.
Relapse Prevention and Behavioral Change Strategies
Relapse prevention therapy helps individuals identify and prepare for situations that may increase vulnerability to substance use. This proactive approach strengthens long-term recovery by increasing awareness and preparedness.
This work includes:
Identifying personal triggers and high-risk situations
Developing structured coping plans
Strengthening emotional awareness and self-monitoring
Building daily routines that support stability and wellbeing
Increasing confidence in maintaining recovery over time
Recovery becomes more sustainable when individuals feel prepared and empowered.
A Personalized, Whole-Person Approach
No two individuals experience addiction in exactly the same way. Our clinicians integrate these approaches to create a treatment plan tailored specifically to your needs, experiences, and goals. Therapy moves at a pace that feels safe and manageable, while steadily helping you build the skills, insight, and emotional stability necessary for lasting change.
Addiction treatment is not about judgment or punishment. It is about understanding, healing, and reclaiming control over your life.

You May Still Have Some Questions Or Concerns About Postpartum Therapy…
I’m worried that others will judge me for seeing a postpartum therapist.
You should know that it’s completely acceptable to ask for outside help and many other people out there seek assistance in adapting to parenthood and juggling the needs of a new baby. In fact, the real issue is that often new parents are reluctant to ask for help or articulate what they’re thinking and feeling.
I’m concerned that it will take a long time for therapy to make a difference.
The goal of therapy is to manage symptoms, teach coping skills, find solutions, and allow clients to move forward into a new way of life confidently. The timeline for specific progress can vary depending on your situation and your needs, but most couples notice improvement within the first few sessions of postpartum therapy.
I have a full schedule and don’t feel like I’ll have the time to attend sessions consistently.
Your postpartum therapist will work with you to find times that will fit effectively into your schedule without getting in the way of your other obligations. Postpartum therapy should not be another responsibility added to your plate but rather something that helps all the other areas of your life feel more manageable.
